On September 9, 1971 a group of inmates at Attica Correctional Facility, a maximum security prison in western New York, began an uprising which lasted for five days. Robert B. McKay was born August 11, 1919 in Wichita, Kansas to Ruth and John McKay. Graduating with a B.S. from the University of Kansas in 1940, he joined the army just before Pearl Harbor. He served in the Philippines and by the time the war ended he had reached the rank of Captain. He went on to earn his J.D. from Yale University in 1947.
